  • Signs, boxes, wood products and other items are created with a variety of materials and the listing will state the expected use (indoor, outdoor etc). If you are unsure please email us to find out the best material for your item prior to ordering.

All items last longer out of the sun and weather, and with gentle handling, and less cleaning your item will last a long time.

Paint, varnish, plastic and wood will discolour or warp when exposed to direct sunlight over time. We select UV resistant products where possible, and more robust materials and sealants for outdoor items, but as items age, this is a natural occurrence over extended time periods.

These items should be cleaned by dusting with a soft, dry lint free cloth or microfibre cloth. For stubborn stains you can use the same cloth, dampened* with warm water and a drop or two of dish soap, squeezed out well prior to gently wiping the spot in question. Never scrub or scrape any item, and do not use abrasive tools/materials or harsh chemical cleaners.

*Please note while most items are sealed, and therefore appropriate to wipe with a damp cloth, some indoor signs or ply products, including height charts, are unsealed, which means wiping with a wet cloth will actually stain the product, if you are unsure or need to remove a stain from an unsealed product you can email us and we will let you know the best way to tackle a mark.

  • Our timber platters & boards are coated with Gilly’s Chopping Board oil or Feast & Watson Orange oil for a natural and food safe finish.

Placing a small piece of baking paper or a silicone mat under any really sticky or runny foods and cleaning immediately after use will help maintain your gorgeous platter and make cleaning easier.

Although designed to last, you can improve platter lifespan by avoiding hard scrubbing, cleaning with hard or abrasive tools/materials or harsh chemical cleaners.

To clean simply wipe gently with a microfibre cloth dampened in warm water and 1-2 drops of dish soap.

Platters can be re-conditioned using a food safe, quality chopping board oil when they naturally begin to age or show small surface marks from utensils over time. Clean well first, and when dry apply the oil as per the brand instructions (usually wiped on with a lint free cloth, with excess removed using a fresh cloth after 1-2hrs. It’s a good idea to allow 24-48hrs for it to soak in and dry before next use.

All timber items will last longer out of the sun and weather, with good handling, and gentle cleaning your platter will last a long time.

  • We use a variety of metals for jewellery findings. As we create costume jewellery the majority of our findings are not made from precious metals, but rather from surgical or stainless steel and/or coated base metals.

These metals will naturally tarnish over time, but can be cleaned by using jewellery tarnish removal products. The rest of the piece should be cleaned by dusting with a soft, dry lint free cloth only.

Do not wet wood jewellery, or it may warp or stain. Never scrub or scrape any item, and do not use abrasive tools/materials or harsh chemical cleaners.

Environmental factors can affect the speed and intensity of tarnishing so storing in a jewellery box or drawer is best.

  • Resin items are unique and fluid creations, with natural variations that make them special. Due to the way resin is cast in moulds then painstakingly hand finished, no two resin items will ever be identical, even using the same materials, colours and mix.

These differences are nothing to worry about, in fact, they’re part of the personality and irreplaceable charm of resin. Resin items are incredibly beautiful, strong and durable pieces.

Due to the unpredictable nature of resin, each casting will have small variations such as darker or lighter pigment areas, minute air bubbles, a slight variation in shape, or may be a small indent where the mix, pigment or materials cast inside, like metallic leaf, hit each-other or the edge of the mould etc.

For this reason resin items usually have a “good side” – the front or top of an item – which will be show-stopping with all the best features on display, and the back or underneath will usually be plainer with more texture.

  • All of our products are made with the utmost of care and quality.

When creating our pieces we use a variety of unique and complex techniques to achieve our beautiful aesthetic.

Please keep in mind that like all things in life, wearable art will eventually wear out, signage (both indoor and outdoor) will eventually wear out too, in varying timeframes depending on the environmental impacts it is subject to and the material of construction.

We carefully select materials and sealants to last as long as possible, so you can enjoy your item for the maximum timeframe.

  • We understand in life accidents can happen, if you damage or break your pieces in any way please do not hesitate to contact us for advice on how to mend them or send them back for repair. Note repair itself and all postage costs for repairs are the responsibility of the buyer, unless the item arrives faulty or significantly not as described and qualifies for a refund (see our Returns Policy and Shipping Information pages for more info) . Prior to sending your pieces back to our workshop please contact us.

SAFETY Information

VERY IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ:

GENERAL SAFETY Information

  • Please supervise usage of all items around children and pets; any item or fixing is breakable under the right conditions, even the best quality ones.

  • Items where one material glued/adhered to another, exposed to weather or degraded over time are more susceptible to breakage.

  • Inspect items regularly for any signs of damage or compromised integrity and cease use immediately if there are any signs present.

  • Small pieces and broken items are a choking hazard for children and pets, as is chewing on or ingesting of any potentially harmful small pieces or components including wood, acrylic, metal or the coatings applied to them.

Marika Knows Things can not be held responsible for injury or damage resulting breakage or use of any product or item, including from falling/impacts, misuse, or spontaneous breakage of any kind. Injuries and damage can happen when items fall, are knocked, or broken for any reason and we want our customers to stay safe.
Following Product Care & Safety instructions will prolong the life of your item, and help keep everyone safe and happy.

MOUNTING & FIXING Information

A good rule of thumb is – expect it to fall, install well so it shouldn’t.

Our items don’t generally come with mountings or fixings (such as wall hooks or adhesive dots) due to the fact these must be carefully chosen depending on the material of the product and wall or material it will be mounted on or fixed to, how it is used and who by.

A FEW SIMPLE SAFETY RULES FOR MOUNTING, PLEASE ENSURE YOU:

  • Always choose hooks/fixings/adhesives appropriate for both the material of the product/item AND the wall/material you are mounting/fixing it to.

  • Always choose hooks/fixings/adhesives rated for a HIGHER weight capacity than you need for your item and materials – size up to the higher weight rating if in doubt.

  • Never place or hang any item directly above a cot or bed, and be aware that small hands can reach a long way to knock items off walls or shelves.

  • Note that large or heavy items need to be secured to the wall with wall anchors, often including a wall plug, and sometimes brackets to prevent tipping.

It seems common sense but is worth mentioning to be aware that placing or mounting any item, particularly heavy/unstable items above or very close to other delicate, valuable or precious items in your home may result in the breakage of either one.

Most of our items are not designed to be used by babies, children or pets (especially small items such as tags or jewellery, for example, which have sizes and/or delicate components that could potentially be a choking hazard or cause injury if swallowed). If an item is designed for children or pets (such as our height charts, tooth fairy boxes or dog tags) the item should only be used under adult supervision and checked regularly for damage to avoid accidents.
